na krótki wypoczynek, o dowolnej porze roku, choć oczywiście sezon
wiosenno-letni będzie najlepszym czasem na podziwianie walijskich krajobrazów.
Wypoczynek można połączyć z udziałem w kursach umiejętności praktycznych
(gotowanie, mechanika, ogrodnictwo) lub treningu komunikacji. Pensjonat
prowadzony jest przez byłego aktora, który na emeryturze odziedziczył po swojej
przyjaciółce wymagający gruntownego
remontu obiekt. Buffy, mimo skomplikowanej historii uczuciowej, urzeka empatią,
otwartością, a przede wszystkim – odwagą. Zgodnie z jego ulubionym
powiedzeniem, nic nie poszło zgodnie z planem, a mimo to udało mu się
stworzyć miejsce, które łączy ludzi. Malowniczo położony pensjonat stał się
przystanią osób nieco pogubionych, rozczarowanych własnym losem i dał im szansę
poznania ludzi, z którymi zapragnęli stworzyć satysfakcjonujące związki.
Powieść Deborah Moggach oddaje niepowtarzalny klimat prowincjonalnej Walii,
rozśmiesza stereotypami i uprzedzeniami przebijającymi z dialogów bohaterów,
porusza opisem chwil, gdy postacie okrywają budzące się w nich uczucia do
innych. Książka idealna na wolniejszy, wakacyjny czas – podróż nie tylko do
miejsca, a jeśli nawet – to do miejsca wyjątkowego.
‘Heartbreak Hotel’ invites for a
short rest, at any time of the year, although obviously spring and summer
seasons will be the most accurate times to admire Welsh landscapes. The rest
can be joined with a participation in practical skills courses (cooking, car
fixing, gardening) or a communication training. The guesthouse is run
by a former actor who inherited this requiring repair building after his
friend’s death. Buffy, despite his complicated emotional past, captivates with
empathy, openess, and most of all – courage. In accordance with his favourite
saying, nothing went according with the plan, and yet he managed to create a
place which connects people. The picturesquely situated guesthouse became a
haven for those a bit lost or disappointed with life and gave them the
opportunity to meet people with whom they wanted to create satisfying
relationships. Moggach’s novel reflects the unique atmosphere of provincial
Wales as well as amuses with stereotypes and prejudices appearing in the
dialogues. Also, there are these moving moments when the characters discover
the feelings arousing in them. ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ seems ideal for the slow,
holiday time – it’s a journey not only to a place, and even if – to an
absolutely unique one.
„Tulipanowa gorączka”, czyli handel cebulkami tych kwiatów, to początkowo tylko tło dla historii romansu Sophii i Jana. Ostatecznie okazuje się, że niepozorna cebulka tulipana może stanowić o losach ludzi. Powieść Moggach prowadzi ulicami siedemnastowiecznego Amsterdamu, pokazuje wnętrza domów zamożnych obywateli, gospody, w których odbywały się spekulacje związane z handlem cebulkami, pracownie malarzy. Pozornie uporządkowane i stateczne życie Holendrów to jednak jedynie fasada, za którą kryje się sieć życiowych zależności, trudnych wyborów i ich przykrych konsekwencji. Ludzie targani są różnymi namiętnościami, ale też ograniczeni sytuacją finansową, konwenansami, wymaganiami narzuconymi przez religię. Walka o realizację własnych pragnień niejednokrotnie kończy się klęską, ale i ta klęska może okazać się jedynie pozorna. Wątki opowiedziane z różnych perspektyw, świat widzialny przeplatający się ze światem uczuć i myśli, wszystko to tworzy powieść, od której trudno się oderwać, a jednocześnie chce się ją smakować powoli i doceniać każdy jej wymiar.
‘Tulip Fever’ – relating the atmosphere around the trade with the bulb of these flowers, at first constituted only the background to the story of Sophia and Jan’s affair. Finally, it turned out that an insconcpicuous tulip bulb can determine human fate. Moggach’s novel leads through the streets of 17th century Amsterdam, shows the interiors of opulent citizens’ houses, inns where speculations connected with tulip bulbs took place, painters’ studios etc. Apparently organized and sedate Dutch people’s lives turn out to be only a facade behind which the net of various dependencies, difficult choices and their sad consequences are hidden. People are torn by passions and at the same time limited by their financial situation, conventions and religious requirements. The struggle for the opportunity to realize desires more often than not ends with failure, but again: this failure may be only apparent. The plots related from various perspectives, the visible world interwoven with the world of feelings and thoughts – they all create a book difficult to put down. At the same time – there is this desire to taste it slowly and appreciate each of its dimensions.
